Incentives Needed For Natural Gas There are tremendous opportunities to reduce carbon emissions by putting natural gas to more use in the electric sector. It’s a no-brainer that we should provide incentives to encourage the retirement of power plants that are inefficient and produce high amounts of carbon, so that they can be replaced with cleaner, more efficient power plants. And it’s equally obvious that there are tremendous opportunities to reduce carbon emissions by putting natural gas to more use in the electric sector. For example, combined cycle natural gas-fired generators are often the most efficient generation facilities in service,…

Research & development into promising carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications – with specific attention to natural gas CCS -- should be encouraged by Congress and policymakers. CCS is a valuable addition to the arsenal of approaches to global carbon reduction and appears particularly well-suited for capturing emissions from a single significant source such as a power plant. Although CCS research and development has inaccurately become synonymous with coal-fired power plants in the mind of the public, it’s critical that lawmakers provide equal opportunities for the funding of CCS with natural gas power plants. In fact, the use of CCS at…
